ICAEW has suggested that it may be a good idea to warn those most likely to be on the receiving end of HMRC’s plumbers tax safe plan.

Around 50,000 plumbers, gas fitters and heating engineers will start receiving letters from HMRC this month alerting them to the opportunity to declare untaxed income and suffer a reduced rate penalty. HMRC has said that not everyone who receives a letter owes tax. However, this could cause alarm to clients whose tax affairs are in order. The letter will explain that, once the opportunity expires, the tax authorities will begin a clampdown on those working in the sector who have failed to declare earnings and pay the tax they owe.
