Claiming back the VAT that you have been charged on legal fees you have been charges will be scrutinised (if the VATman comes to call). So how do you get it right when filling in a VAT return to ensure that you don't miss out?

If the legal costs relate to the taxable (as in VAT) busines then you can recover the VAT. Otherwise don't bother to claim it. For those that you do claim, keep answers to the potential questions about them on the VAT file.
